Barbecues are generally disposable aluminum trays containing coal and road lighting (on paper or other materials impregnated with a flammable liquid) and covered with a sheet of grid. The idea is that you can just light the road, waiting until the flames die down, then BBQ lunch on top of it. When the grill is over and the grill has cooled, can then pull the whole thing away.
After using the grill as many times, I personally have found they can work well. They are ideal for picnics or camping (of course, verify that the lighting of a barbecue is allowed on site in question). However, there are a number of ways you can fail. Here are some tips based on my experience:
1. Disposable barbecues often are surrounded by plenty of packing material. For example, I have purchased have arrived in a cardboard box or tray with paper signs on the top, and wrapped in cellophane. You should be sure to remove all packaging before using the grill!
2. My experience is that these grills work best when not too windy - Even modest wind can cause problems.
3. In making the case, coal can easily accumulate at one end of the grid. Before lighting the grill, grilled stir carefully to ensure the charcoal is even out through the grill.
4. Disposable grills generally come with instructions - Read carefully - as there can be significant safety issues. Also, for those disposable grills I've used, I found the instructions in general, will tell to wait until the initial fire off before placing food on the grill, and this appears to be an advice worth following.
