Do you need an FFL to purchase/own/use a .50BMG rifle and/or ammo?

For a state such as Iowa, which doesn't have any of the tight gun restrictions many of the more heavily populated states along the coastal time zones have, i was wondering what it takes to get a rifle chambered in .50BMG for a person with enough money for one. A friend told me you could put a .50BMG upper onto an ar15 lower, with it remaining classified as an AR15. But those uppers look to cost as much as the Vulcan Arms .50BMG, in the $1800 price range, so i see no reason other than dodging laws to get the conversion instead of a dedicated rifle.

So if i went to my local privately owned gun shop, could i have them order me a .50BMG? Or is it a class 3 weapon? Could i just get the ammo, or is the ammo also subject to needing a license to purchase?

Now, I'll go the extra mile and comment on the AR-15.

The only registered part of an AR-15 (for now) is the lower receiver. After that, ANY other part you can care to get is fair game, and you can have it shipped to your house.

Note that the lower receiver is a single piece of non-moving metal. Go figure.

An AR is an AR, no matter what caliber it is, be it .17, .22, .45 ACP, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, .223, 5.56, .50 AE, .50 Beowulf, or .50BMG.
